IBDP Physics (2025): A.3 Work, energy and power

This guide is for the DP Physics syllabus with first assessments in 2025

A.3 Work, energy, and power

Demos and simulations

  1. Click start and observe the motion
  2. Change the selection in the "Try these" dropdown menu and click "start".
  3. For each selection - explain what you see. What is happening and why?
  1. Press "Fire" and observe the simulation
  2. Reset and select any values for "Mass of bullet",  "initial velocity of bullet", and "mass of wood block"
  3. Using conservation of momentum during the collision, and conservation of mechanical energy after the collision, predict the maximum height of the wooden block.
  4. Press "Fire" again. Measure the change in height using the ruler on the right. Does this match your predicted value?

Are the speeds different or the same when hitting the ground? Why?

1. Press "Run"

What energy transfers are taking place?

2. Change the mass, height, and force of friction.

3. Using a calculation, predict how far the box will slide with your settings (g = 9.8).

4. Press "Run" and check your answer.
