IBDP Physics (2025): B.3 Gas laws

This guide is for the DP Physics syllabus with first assessments in 2025

B.3 Gas laws

Demos and simulations

Part 1

  1. Choose Volume vs Temp graph
  2. What does the graph look like? Why?
  3. What is the meaning of the slope of the graph?
  4. Increase the pressure. What happens to the slope? Why?

Part 2

  1. Choose Pressure vs.  Temp graph
  2. What does the graph look like? Why?
  3. What is the meaning of the slope of the graph?
  4. Decrease the volume. What happens to the slope? Why?

Part 3

  1. Choose Pressure vs Volume graph
  2. What does the graph look like? Why?
  3. Change the pressure and notice what happens to the volume. You are moving along an isothermal curve. Does the temperature change?
  4. This graph is not linear, but can be linearized. Instead of having V on the horizontal axis, how could you choose your variable so that you'll have a linear (and proportional) relationship?

Part 1

  1. Choose a volume and temperature
  2. Set the No. of molecules to maximum
  3. Set the molecular mass (size) to minimum.

Observe the path of the traced particle. Would this gas follow the ideal gas law?

Part 2

  1. Keep the previous settings but change the molecular mass to maximum.

Observe the path of the traced particle. Would this gas follow the ideal gas law? If not, what assumption is not true?
