C.1 Simple harmonic motion (+HL)

Demos and simulations

  1. Set the "number" to the smallest possible
  2. Switch between "SHM" and "Circle View"

Can you see the connection between the two?

Choose low frequency

  1. What is the difference in degrees between a crest and a trough of a wave?
  2. What is the difference in radians between two crests?
  3. What is the difference in degrees between a crest and the next equilibrium point?

 

Try selecting velocity, acceleration, force, and energy to see the magnitudes and directions of the quantities at different points

  1. Select "Animation 2"
  2. Displace both systems and click play

What can you say about the frequencies? (does the initial displacement determine the frequencies?)

What can you say about the amplitudes?

 

Task 1 (change in θ)

  1. Set θ = 0°. What is the "starting point" for your graph
  2. Increase θ to 90°. How does this affect your graph?
  3. Assume θ = 90°. What does this mean for the "starting point" for the following SHM oscillators:
    1. Pendulum
    2. Horizontal mass-spring system
    3. Vertical mass-spring system

Task 2 (Change ω) 

  1. Increase ω. How does this affect your graph?
  2. How does increasing ω affect the period (T)? How do you see it from the graph?
  3. How does increasing ω affect the frequency (f)? How do you see that from the graph?
